Sauna Benefits

By Anna Lynn Sibal

Bathing in a sauna used to be seen by many as some exotic holistic therapy that is mostly recommended in alternative medicine. But now, even mainstream medical practitioners have seen the benefits that going to a sauna can give a person, and it is now something that they prescribe wholeheartedly to patients.

The health benefits that you can get from the sauna are mostly due to the heat produced inside a sauna and the sweating that you do when you stay in it.
But how exactly can heat and sweating be good for the health? The common reasons why bathing in the sauna is good for the body:

    1. Increased blood circulation. One of the things that the heat in the sauna does to the body is to increase the circulation of the blood. What happens here is that the heart pumps blood faster and the blood vessels expand to accommodate the increased blood supply. It also causes your diastolic blood pressure to drop.

    2. Rejuvenation. With increased blood circulation, more nutrients are brought to individual cells. Blood is the conduit by which the cells of the body get the nourishment that they need to rebuild themselves. This also ensures faster healing of injured tissues in the body.

    3. Detoxification. The blood is also the conduit that takes away the waste materials produced by the cells in the body. Thus, with increased blood circulation, the cells are cleansed and detoxified more effectively.

    4. Boosts immune system. It is typical for a sauna bather to feel feverish after spending time inside a sauna. That is because the heat elevates the body’s temperature, causing an artificial fever. When the body is in this condition, the autoimmune system becomes more active in fighting off the disease-causing bacteria and viruses.

    5. Relieves tension. A wonderful thing that heat does to the body is that it loosens cramped and tense muscles. This is great both for active people and people who are prone to spend more time sitting behind a desk. For active people, the heat melts away the pain from overused muscles. For sedentary people, the heat takes away the stiffness of being in the same position for too long.

    6. Weight loss. Did you know that you can burn 300 calories from staying in a sauna for 20 minutes? This is just the same amount of calories that you get to burn from jogging for the same amount of time. The sauna is, therefore, a low-impact alternative to strenuous exercise.

    7. Clears the skin. Regular sauna bathers typically have clear skin. That is because the heat opens the pores of the skin and the sweat washes away the excess oil and dirt out of those pores. Without any dirt and excess oil in the skin, the pimple-causing bacteria have nothing to feed on. Moreover, the heat in the sauna can kill those bacteria as well.

The biggest benefit that you can get from staying in the sauna for a while is relaxation and stress-relief. Stress is the number one cause of a lot of diseases today. The less stress you feel, the healthier you can get.
